10 Steps to becoming a Facebook Guru
By Jamie | August 29, 2007
Over the past couple of months I have introduced a number of my friends to Facebook. Generally I have always had the same response back, “I’m not sure what to do” or “Bebo is easier”. I agree getting started with Facebook is not straight forward as it could be. So here are ten simple slides to get you started with Facebook.
Oh no, not Facebook again
Already a Facebook guru, check out my post on 25 Facebook Desktop and Web Applications. Not sure why you need a Facebook account, especially one for business? Read Entrepreneurs Need Both Facebook and LinkedIn, although personally I have given up with LinkedIn. Perhaps your not even sure what facebook is? Check out this short video.
How to use Facebook
The idea of the slides is to give you pointers on places to explore within Facebook, highlighting its main features. l’ve tried to keep these slides as simple as possible.
1) Creating Your Profile
2) Find Friends
3) Interact with Friends
4) Find Groups to Join
5) Interact with a Group
6) Manage your Applications
7) Add an Application
8 ) Adding Photo’s
9) Attend Events
10) Additional Features and Settings
Alternatively you can view these slides at SlideShare, although the conversion quality isn’t what I hoped for.
Terinea on Facebook
While on the subject of Facebook here is our open group called “Friends of Terinea“, why not pop by and say hello. Oh and by the way, Bebo is for kids!

I’ll be the first to admit that I have a bunch of these accounts and have no real idea why - but they all seemed must have things at the time - Myspace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Orkut, FriendsReunited, Jaiku, Twitter, LiveJournal, StumbleUpon, and Pownce amongst others.

MySpace - Bands / Nightclubs
LinkedIn - Business, but I’m not a fan
Orkut - Teens?
FriendsReunited - How to win big and then fail, they should be a Facebook or a Bebo by now
Jaiku - I use this to pull all my Web 2.0 /RSS feeds into one
Twitter - I use it now and again but I don’t interact with anyone
StumbleUpon - Looks promising, I must make more effort with this
Pownce - Tried it, but now I can’t be bothered with it
At the end of the day it depends on how much effort you put in and to one extend how much your friends use it.
Facebook is great because you integrate other social networks into it.

Thanks for the Facebook tutorial! I finally joined Facebook a few days ago. When I joined I was sort of confused because I thought it would be like Myspace where you can see profiles about people. I searched for my old classmates from high school and college and wanted to see what they were up to, but didn’t want to “poke” them or add them as friends, so I got frustrated and haven’t been back since.
Oh, and I joined LinkedIn and am sort of confused by it too. I guess there aren’t enough pictures for me;)

Jeni - Facebook takes time but its well worth investing time in it. Give it a couple of weeks and see what happens.
Don’t much about Skin care, but your blog looks rather good.

Jamie,
A question for you. Which do you think is best for a business, Facebook or MySpace? Obviously I know it depends on the rationale, but just for having a ‘company page’ what is best?
Thanks

Andy - I think if you sell or provide a service to the public, then Facebook Page (or Group) and maybe even a MySpace Page.
Club, Pub or Band - Almost certainly a MySpace Page.
We have a Facebook Page and Group, to be honest don’t do much with, blog is the focus of our social media activities.
