New Start Scotland

I checked out New Start Scotland exhibition on the 23rd of March at the Glasgow SECC to see if it would be worth attending next year as exhibitor.

The event seem fairly well attending when I visited on the Friday. There was a mixture of businesses trying to get your attention, workshops and people offering free business advice.

Edinburgh University Builds Green Super Computer

March 22, 2007

It is always good to see Edinburgh or Scotland for matter in the news for technological break throughs …

A supercomputer 10 times more energy efficient and up to 300 times faster than its traditional equivalents has been unveiled in Scotland.

Called Maxwell, the computer has been built at the University of Edinburgh and uses field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) in place of conventional processors.

Its Scottish developers believe Maxwell represents a new generation of compact and energy-efficient computers. Unlike ordinary general-purpose processors, FPGA chips can be programmed to perform very specific tasks. Once that programming is accomplished, FPGA chips can be much faster than performing the same tasks in software running on general-purpose chips.

The technology also has the benefits of requiring less space and running much more coolly than equivalent machines. Maxwell only takes up two computer racks at the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Center.

Is That Windows Updates In Your Pocket?

March 21, 2007

Or is that AutoPatcher?

AutoPatcher is a downloadable installer with all the Windows updates prepackaged which you can burn to a CD before going onsite. When AutoPatcher is run on the clients computer it automates the Windows Update process by finding which Windows updates needs to be installed and installs them for you, without the need to go online.

Best of all, the makers of AutoPatcher release update packages every month so you can easily keep it to date to install the latest Windows patches. AutoPatcher currently has a Windows 2000 version, a Windows XP version and a Windows 2003 version.

Linux Desktop Blogging Clients

Anyone who blogs on a daily basis knows that a desktop blogging client (application) can take the sting out of the whole process. Very much like using a word processor such as Microsoft Word you can format text, insert hyperlinks, spell check, insert pictures, technorati links, maps, YouTube videos in seconds rather than minutes with a web based interface.

In our company I’m problably classed as the Windows Guy, Mark is the Linux/FreeBSD Guy and Robin is Mr Mac man.

Anyway much to my delight the other day Mr Mark asked me if here could write a post for the blog. Now I’ve been trying to get the rest of the company to do this since I started the blog over a year ago, with no success!

So to make it easier for him I’ve collected a couple of links to Linux based blogging clients.

Not sure if they are any good but here is the list…

I personally use Windows Live Writer and a list of Mac clients and other Window based clients can be found here.

Promoting Your New Web Site

March 20, 2007

Now that your new shiny web site is live how can you begin to drive traffic to it? Basically you need to get as many links to your web site from other sites that are either related to your subject area and/or rank higher than yours. It is alot more complicated that this but this is the summary of it.

This post should help to get you started.

  1. Major Search Engines
    1. http://www.google.com/addurl/ - Google
    2. http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/dir/suggest/suggest-01.html -  Yahoo Directory
    3. http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html - Yahoo Search Engine
    4. http://submitit.bcentral.com/msnsubmit.htm - MSN
    5. http://www.altavista.com/addurl/default - Altavista
    6. http://dmoz.org/add.html - Dmoz - Open Directory
  2. Your Current Ranking
Before you commence your site promotion check your current site ranking using these tools. Then in a couple of weeks check back to see if it has increased. Make sure you pay attention to Alexa and related sites!
    1. PR Checker
      http://www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php
    2. Alexa Related Sites
Add your web site address and then click on “Get Traffic”. Then click on “Edit Info” add as much information as you can. Alexa isn’t the benchmark at which you should measure your web site popluarity.
  3. Free Web Directories
Many of these sites will request a return link, which you should place in your credits section. You will also find it worth searching for directories that specialise in certain websites. For example Clutch and Clasp credits page lists a couple of Jewellery directories.
    1. UK Business Directory
    2. UK Small Business Directory
    3. FreeIndex.co.uk
    4. Splut
    5. Blue Daffodil Directory
    6. B2B index
    7. Small Business Wiki
    8. Wikology.com
    9. http://www.move-here.info/
  4. Additional Directories / Search Engines - Paid and Specailised
