8 Free Online Virus and Spyware Scans

    By Jamie | May 28, 2007

If you’ve bought a PC in the last three years or so it more than likely came with Norton Anti Virus pre-installed. Unless you renewed your subscription with Norton, your PC is no longer fully protected! Every day hundreds of new viruses and spyware are created and spread through out the internet. Nearly everyday Companies like Norton provide updates  called viruses definitions for their software, to ensure your PC has the maximum protection.

    Personal Use

If your PC is for personal use and you don’t want to pay for Norton Anti Virus I recommend uninstalling it and downloading AVG Anti Virus. AVG also provides Spyware and Rootkit software for free.

If you need a open source solution check out ClamWin. Although, you need to run this product at least once a day because it doesn’t provide an active scan (realtime or background scan).

Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

    Commercial Use

I also recommend using AVG Anti Virus for small to medium sized businesses. Which offers a balance of value for money, performance and protection. I’m also a fan of McAfee products too.

    Online Scans

You can also scan your PC for viruses and spyware for free using online scans. Trend Micro is a good place to start

    1. Trend Micro
Trend Micro HouseCall is an application for checking whether your computer has been infected by viruses, spyware, or other malware. HouseCall performs additional security checks to identify and fix vulnerabilities to prevent reinfection.
    2. McAfee
McAfee FreeScan helps you detect thousands of viruses on your computer. Based on the award-winning McAfee VirusScan engine, FreeScan searches for viruses, including the latest known “in the wild” viruses, and displays a detailed list of any infected files. Should viruses be found, FreeScan even provides links to more information about the viruses and what you can do to clean your system.
    3. Kkaspersky
This free online virus scanner is very powerful and scans your machine very deeply, so it could take hours to complete. We suggest running it during a time of low activity. Take the Kaspersky Challenge and see what malware your current antivirus software missed - you may be surprised.
    4. CA Anti Virus and CA Spyware
CA Virus can also cure infected files
    5. Freedom
Freedom Online Virus Check is a FREE online anti-virus scanner for web users. It allows you to scan your hard drives, diskettes, CD-ROMs, network drives, directories, and specific files for any hidden viruses, Trojans or worms. Freedom Online Virus Check uses state-of-the-art technology to scan your PC for all types of viruses.
    6. Bitdenfender
BitDefender Online Scanner is a fully functional antivirus product. It features all required elements for thorough antivirus scanning and effective cleaning: it scans your system’s memory, all files, folders and drives’ boot sectors, providing you with the option to automatically clean the infected files.
    7. Norton Symantec
    8. Panda

What I’m seeing is lots of three year old computers with antivirus protection that’s been expired for two years. Needless to say, it can be quite ugly.

My favourite one, is taking over IT support of a business and finding each PC has different provider (Norton, AVG, McAfee) for their virus protection. This becomes a nightmare in administration and also a security (failed renew subscriptions). Often we advise the business to bit the bullet, clean the lot out and go with one provider.
