Radio Caroline, The Naspter of the 1960’s?
By Jamie | August 13, 2007
Some 50 years ago if you wanted to listen to some “Pop” music on the radio you probably needed to tune into a pirate radio station such as Radio Caroline which was aired during the 1960’s in the UK .
Today thankfully we can listen to just about any type of radio station via digital radio and the internet. At the time the government was up in arms about pirate radio and the type of the music played. Eventually BBC Radio One was formed to cater for the new gene.
History Repeating
On the BBC breakfast last week the old stars of the pirate radio stations are reuniting to celebrate the success and the changes pirate radio forced governments to make. How, well for 6 days you can listen to the old guys on Pirate BBC Essex via the last century’s wireless (AM) or today’s wireless technology (Internet).
Maybe in 50 years time we will see a reunion of Naspter of old and other file sharing sites celebrated for bringing about changes in the music industry?

In 1957 I was listening to Radio Luxembourg (under the bedclothes in the school dormitory!) not Caroline which I’m sure came a bit later.

Yes, I am hoping that one day file sharing will become a bit more accepted among government types. For now we will have to remain criminals. Excellent post.
